A series of workshops for kids that want to learn cartooning and create their own comic books. No long-term commitment, just come in for one workshop and see how you like it. Most kids come back each week, where the session functions like an open studio, where we guide your child on proper techniques to develop their characters and craft their storylines. Drawing with pencil, pen and ink will be the focus. All materials and supplies will be provided. Just bring your imagination and willingness to work.
Workshops are suitable for ages 7 and up. Contact Us with any questions
The workshops are led by cartooninist and illustrator Mike Schmidt - who works directly with the kids to help craft their stores and develop characters.
It’s not a class, it’s a workshop - hands-on and interactive.
Your child will have the option to create their very own comic book, or comic strip - and some kids just prefer to develop characters in a sketchbook.
We show the kids how to approach drawing characters in motion, develop backgrounds and settings and composition of the comic grids.
Many kids work on the same comic over time - some come up with new ideas and just like to spend some quality time drawing in a creative environment.
No, our policy for all workshops/sessions is No Drop Offs. We urge parents to try their hand at drawing and/or coming up with some creative ideas -or- journal.
Nothing, you do not need to bring any supplies. We supply the paper and all drawing materials. Some kids do have their own set of pencils and/or pens - which you are welcome to bring.
We do encourage the kids to take their work home and continue working on it - bringing it back for future sessions. If they prefer to leave it here at the shop, we can keep their work here, so it’s ready when they come back for future sessions.
The workshops we run on Wednesdays & Fridays are for ages 7 and up.
If your child is younger, and you'd like for them to try making their own Comic - we suggest coming to our “Drawing with Frank & Friends” sessions - which we are running every Sunday afternoon (3:30-5:30pm).
No, the Comics & Cartooning Workshops do not involve printmaking or painting activities. The focus is on drawing, developing characters and crafting your child’s storyline.
Kids use pencils, colored pencils and ink pens to create their art.
Yes, if you sign up, in advance, for any 5 sessions - the cost is $100 ($20 per session instead of $25).
To sign up for multiple sessions, click on the drop-down above and choose “Any five sessions (save $25)”. When you arrive for the first session, we will make a note and keep track of the sessions for you.
No, we will show your child techniques to help them develop their drawings. All your child really needs is their imagination and willingness to try something new.
The answer to this question will really depend on your child. These sessions are not structured like our printmaking workshops - so the energy is a bit more chill and quiet. If your child has a very hard time sitting still and focusing - this might not be for them- though - every child is different and some kids that have a really hard time sitting still - enjoy creating their comics so much - their parents are surprised how much they are able to concentrate.
We do let all kids over 7 give it a try and if it seems like this might not be the right session for your child, we will let you know.
Our Sunday afternoon sessions “Drawing with Frank & Friends” will include developing comics and cartooning - and those sessions will be a bit more high-energy - so perhaps you want to consider attending one of those.
No, our approach is focused on drawing and crafting your storylines with pencils/pen and paper. Some kids try to make flip-book animations - which is certainly possible, but there is no computer animation as part of these workshops.

We are a very small family run operation and -in addition to this workshop- we have another business that we run and freelance jobs - so if you want to get in touch with us, best way is to Fill out the Form Here. We will get back to you, via email, asap.
